It’s All About The Kids

I have to admit, there is very little that I enjoy more than being around kids.  My entire life, even from when I was a teenager, I have been able to enjoy myself with kids.  I can remember on family vacations, even when I was an older teenager I could build sandcastles with kids I did not even know. We were just staying at the same motel in Laguna Beach and there was sand and buckets and fun.  And today..it is no different.  Kids just bring out the biggest smiles in me.

So lets talk about smiles…..as in our annual Smiles for Life Whitening fundraiser.  Now, through the end of June you can get your pearly whites even whiter…and every single penny you pay goes to children’s charities throughout the country.  I am part of a great bunch of dentists called the Crown Council and we have set up where discus Dental provides the supplies, we supply our labor and you get a 100% tax write off since all the money raised goes to the charities.  50 % goes to national charities and 50% goes to the local charity of my choice.

This year I have chosen the Hollywood Wilshire YMCA and their program of providing after school activities at the Wilshire Crest Elementary School.  There is no longer any funding for physical activity at the school so the YMCA is picking up the slack (at a cost of about $100 per student)  They are also trying to educate them on eating right and all the other things they should be doing to be healthy. Did you know that a recent study printed in the medical journal called Obesity found that obese kids actually had poorer salivary flow than other kids and had a higher rate of cavities?  So you can whiten your teeth (at reduced rates) and help kids get healthy.  If that is not a WIN WIN than I don’t know what is.  And you don’t have to be a patient at our office to participate.  SO, if anyone you know is interested in whitening their smile have them give us a call as this charity drives ends when June ends.

Today, Sunday, was actually a pretty nice day and I was lucky enough to spend it with a lot of the staff from my office and their kids at the Wilshire LAPD Carnival.  The police department does not get any funding for their programs for the kids so this was one of their fundraisers.  My wife and I had the pure pleasure of watching Daniel and Alyssa (Andrea’s kids along with her better half’s younger sister), Kira (Wendy’s little girl), Hank (Madison’s son) and Alyssa #2 (Anna’s granddaughter…..I know she doesn’t look old enough to be a grandmother) and special friend Ahneesah scream with joy on different carnival rides.  There were even a fair amount of grownups there including a previous employee, Laura.  Again, it was about the kids.  And you know how good the carnival was.  Madison was concerned that Hank wasn’t enjoying a spinning ride and when he got off he described it as good and weird at the same time but he really liked it.    Thank you to all of the team who came out and made it a really great event for our office.  Let’s do it again sometime, ok.

And last night I got to go to my first Elk’s event as my wife’s cousin was installed s the head of their chapter.  The Elk’s proved for Veterans and Kids.  It was a really nice affair and it seems like they really get into what they do. There was a small highlight for me that had nothing to do with the event last night. The surprise for me was a woman I had met at another family affair last year told me what an impact I had on her young son.  It seems that at the dinner last year for some reason I brought up how gum disease leads to other issues with the human body.  I had no idea how intently her y son was listening but he wasn’t too happy when his dentist told him he needed to brush better because he had gingivitis.  He remembered my talk and got to taking better care of his teeth.  It was a complete surprise and so gratifying to know that I actually impacted a young boy and now he will be healthier for life.
