Picture this; 10:30ish am and the DJ starts playing the U2 hit “It’s a Beautiful Day” and that pretty much describes how great an event the ‘Healthy Kids Day 2011” was at the Hollywood Wilshire YMCA was on April 16.
It was the first really hot day of the year and over 800 kids and their families came through the fair. There were health screenings, dental screenings, healthy foods and fun activities for the kids. The Y set up a stage for there to be different performances during the day. There was the Adult Latin Dance group that kicked it off and then came all the little dancers. Some of them were very young and had some stage fright but the audience cheered them all on equally. They had the karate class do an exhibition and of course they had the dunk tank to get back at all the YMCA regular staff.
Our office was blessed to have the incredible support of our super Crest Rep, Ashley Grant, who provided samples for all the kids and their families. There were coloring books and little games to help motivate the kids to brush their teeth and of course all types of tooth pastes for everyone to use. We had one of our superstar hygienists, Madison, there to help and I even enlisted the help of my son, Joey, to help set up and distribute products. And all we got in return all day were just smiles and thank you’s. What a great day.
But I took away something more important than just our team helping in our community. I saw, first hand, how very important the YMCA is for the community. They did not stop their regular schedules programs, all day long people were going in and out and utilizing the facility. I look forward to continuing our office support as we start working with the at risk women that live in a special part of the Y.
SMILES FOR LIFE: We are almost halfway through the charity event where anyone, patients or strangers, can get their teeth whitened in our office for a reduced fee and all the proceeds go to children’s charities. Our office has chosen the YMCA Wilshire Crest School program for our local charity. It’s a Win Win for everyone…so get your teeth whitened today.
Last but not least, I have a confession to make. There are times I like to eat a good old hamburger, bun and all (not too often it is not on my diet). Last week I had the best hamburger I have ever had in Los Angeles at the “Hole in the Wall” Burger Joint located at Santa Monica Blvd Bentley Ave. Run by excellent Chef Bill Dertouzos (who at different times won the best restaurant and best cupcake in Los Angeles)and the equally incredible Susan McAlindon, you get a half pound of fresh ground angus beef, never frozen. I had it on the pretzel bun (recommended by the person taking my order) and had the juiciest burger ever. They also have turkey and veggie burgers as well. They are starting to get much pub about their joint…which is actually small, but set up really well. If you are ever on the west side and want a burger…I highly recommend it.
