The New and Improved Coke Pepsi Challenge

There are several important facts about the new and improved Coke Pepsi challenge. First, included are both fully leaded (sugar) and unleaded (diet) Coke and Pepsi. Second, the challenge is now open to all soft drink manufacturers and flavors (like 7-Up, Dr. Pepper, Mountain Dew and the rest of the pack). Thirdly due to low budget constraints you will not see much (this means any) advertising on television, at the movies or in print medium like newspapers or People magazine.

At the last session of the American Academy for Oral Systemic Health (an organization dedicated to bring both doctors and dentists together to improve the health of Americans) a challenge was pretty much laid out. Any of us who believe in the philosophy of AAOSH were going to have to be the foot soldiers to help improve the health of our patients, family, friends and co-workers…probably one person at a time. This is not an easy task since it does not appear to be the direction the American public wants right now.

The genesis for the New and Improved Coke Pepsi Challenge is about trying to reduce consumption of some of the ingredients that are contributing to the massive increase in obesity in this country, which in turn fuels multiple disease entities and ultimately leads to premature death. These ingredients are sugar, high fructose corn syrup and all other sweeteners, real or artificial (except for a few like xylitol which are natural and have multiple health benefits).

Here is how the New and Improved Coke Pepsi Challenge works. The next time that you want to drink soda just say no. Instead drink water, coffee, tea or milk (please don’t add sugar to your coffee or tea, that defeats the purpose of the Challenge). And for those of you who are parents the challenge can be extended to fruit juices and all the other drinks that have sugar added to them.

What could be the benefit for you to participate in the new challenge? First, your dentists will probably like it, you will be removing a major source of risk of getting cavities and for parents of young kids this could be the tipping force between a lifetime of replacing broken down fillings verses never having fillings to begin with. Second, you might find that you actually feel better. Third, your weight might actually be easier to maintain or it can help you lose weight. Fourth, as your health improves you cost the health care system less. And if you can get someone else to join the challenge you might help improve their health and eventually we might actually see the cost of health care across America go down.

So as is my responsibility as a healthcare provider I want to treat you less, not more. I have created the New and Improved Coke Pepsi Challenge to help you and anyone else you care to share this with. And since I have ripped off a few tag lines already let me finish with this one.
