What do you wish for this holiday season?

It is occurring to me, that as usual, I can sit here and say where did the time fly so quickly? It just seems like 2012 was just starting and here it is December 21st. It is also smack dab middle of the holiday season and like many I can also sit and wish for all the things I might want or need for the New Year.

I can certainly look back at this past year and say that so much has already happened for me. I was chosen as clinician of the year by the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry. I made it to CareerFusion for the first time (and am ready to go right after the New Year) I joined some other dental organizations, most notably the American Academy for Oral Systemic Health, which will help guide me to provide better care for our family of patients. We introduced the Biolase Waterlase laser into our office along with ozone therapy, again, trying to provide the most cutting edge and preventive care to our patients as possible.

I exceeded some of my own personal goals as far as health. I managed to lose some more weight and am at the same weight that I was in dental school some 30 plus years ago. I did this by continuing to work out and by changing my diet again, really cutting out added sugar where ever I could and limiting my consumption of breads and pasta. And I was exposed to a saying by Mahatma Gandhi which has become my mantra. I now try to live by “you must be the change you want to see in the world”

Those of you who know me, or are patients at Southern California Dental Health Associates, have heart me say that regardless of your political affiliation, the concept of affordable health care is an oxymoron. I am not so proud to day that in the coming year that my family is now part of the $20,000 club. That is how much the premiums for health insurance cost me and add our high deductible of $6200 and I spend $26,200 before the insurance company spends a penny on me or my family.

So, here is the next big revelation. I am busting my butt off trying to be healthy. I know my wife and kids do the same. I don’t think the insurance company is going to come over my house and check out our individual health to say…”We see what a great job you are doing, Dr. Jon, we are going to lower your premiums because you are indeed taking care of yourself and will be saving us (the insurance company) money down the road.” NO, I don’t think that is gong to happen. Why I take care of myself is probably just as Dr. OZ has said ‘“What we haven’t done is get to the very root reality of the flaws we have in the health care system. True health care reform cannot happen in Washington. It has to happen in our kitchens, in our homes, in our communities. All health care is personal.”

So what do I wish for in the coming year? I wish for peace of earth, enough of teaching children hatred (definitely not an inherited trait, but definitely learned). I dream of a world where children can be safe in a school environment and wherever they may be. These are global issues, but I will do my best to help those in my community. But perhaps my biggest wish is that at least one person reads this and realizes that they are the master of their own body and they can make a difference in their own health. And if you need any help…just let me know. I would love to help.
