Where is Health Care Reform

Life is full of choices.  As a parent I tried to impart onto my kids that they always have choices as to what they do.  However, sometimes, with bad choices can come bad consequences.  But it was still up to them to make their own choices.  And I can share with you that my boys did not always make the best choices and there were times they had to deal with the consequences of their choices.  But to this day I am the most proud dad in the world of my two boys.  My youngest will turn 20 in a few weeks and there will be no more teenagers in my house.

As one of the dentists at Southern California Dental Health Associates I am a strong advocate for not only dental health but overall health.  For as long as I can remember sugar was always the villain in the world of cavities.  And in the past few years we have seen the medical literature start being more critical of sugar as well as many are using metabolic syndrome disease and diabesity to describe what has been going on in the overall health of our country.

So, I am going to challenge you to do a little research to see how they are describing a lot of medical conditions today..as inflammatory disease.  Yes, heart disease, diabetes (type 2), Parkinson’s, and some cancers to name a few have all been identified as to having chronic inflammation as a significant risk factor. And as a dentist I can tell you perhaps the most common source of chronic inflammation in the adult human body is gum disease.  Any type of gum disease, so if your gums bleed when you brush or floss or use softpicks (my favorite)  then you have chronic inflammation.

The person who changed my life the most was Dr. Robert Lustig of UC Medical who coined the term “Sugar, the bitter truth”.    Check out his videos on youtube. He goes into all the metabolic issues of sugar consumption in this country but there was one thing he said that stuck with me.  The number one source of an over reactive immune system….SUGAR.    We have the best medical care in the world and yet we are getting sicker all the time.  Could it be the massive increase in sugar consumption in this country?  Today the average person consumes 150 pounds a year compared to about 7 ½ pounds in the year 1700.  Just the facts here.

You have a choice about what you eat, but as stated above, there are consequences.  No different than in your dental health.  The ads on TV and magazines all show the benefits of trying to have excellent oral hygiene, but I can’t go home and floss your teeth for you.  Health Care Reform will start with you.

The picture is from a retreat I went to last weekend where I was able to work on myself,  the view was like being an angel above the clouds…very spritual
