I just love kids. They are full of life and such innocence. And that belly laugh, when I hear it it’s all I can do not to just do the same. But it is when they are put into a new environment and they have to take it all in…that’s what I call sensory overload. It just seems to that the child a little time to asses, process and then get on with life.
So, I have just attended 2 amazing dental conferences…back to back in Las Vegas. There were the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry and the American Academy for Oral Systemic Health. And I feel just like an 2 year old. I have been exposed to so much new and exciting information. I’m still in the amazement phase, I haven’t even had time to assimilate it but let me share some info I got.
I love these two meetings because they are about prevention and doing the least harm for our patients. And you know me, I’m all about prevention.
So let’s start with the WCMID meeting. Learned some more stuff about cavities. They have now shown over 50 different bacteria that cause cavities. But it’s more than just the bacteria, it is still a pH mediated biofilm disease. And they have known shown 10 different genetic markers that can affect one’s resistant to decay.
Let me give you some highlights from the AAOSH meeting now. The correlation between oral health and your heart health is greater than ever. Numerous medical doctors shared published studies, as well as their own cases, where reduction of periodontal disease causing bacteria reduced the risk of heart disease and stroke. One study they showed suggested that up to 50% of heart attacks could have had major contributing bacteria from both the biofilms that cause disease and cavities (or root tip abscess).
Now this is just the tip of the iceberg. 4 ½ days of lectures have left me feeling just like a 2 year old. It will take some time to assimilate and implement more in out office to help you…but trust me our office is all about better care and knowledge for you.
