What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that occurs when the muscles in a patient’s throat relax too much while the patient is sleeping. When the muscles relax too much, the airway collapses and keeps necessary oxygen from reaching the brain. In response, the brain wakes the body up just enough to return the throat to its normal position. From there, the throat muscles may relax too much again, and start an endless cycle.
Patients with sleep apnea can wake up hundreds of times during the night without realizing it, and find it difficult to achieve a deep enough state of sleep to wake up rested. Sleep apnea patients can feel tired or lethargic, even after they’ve gotten a full eight hours of rest. If left untreated, sleep apnea can cause more serious health concerns including heart problems.
