The 4th of July means you have choices

Now, I may be getting up there is years but I do seem to remember that one of the great things about being an American is that we live in a free country, one where we get to make choices. It also means that everyone is free to criticize any choice that you make ( I also seem to think this is a rite of passage when you are a teenager…your parents get to criticize anything and everything you do..but I digress)

For a variety of reasons I have been exposed to a new way of thinking that I really feels gives me a second chance to grow up in life. In it I have learned the only person I am responsible for is myself. I can’t change anyone if they don’t want to change and I have also had to learn that I can’t really judge anyone else. I can’t fix everyone’s problems and it is hard enough just to fix my own problems.

But something else has happened to me over the last few years. I have become a student of health at a level that I have not approached ever before (and this includes my years at dental school). On this path I have joined several different organizations like the American Academy of Oral Systemic Health. The World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry and am a founding member of the International Association of ozone in Health and Dentistry.

And I have discovered the world of Audible..books on my iphone that I can actually listen to when I drive or when I work out. And I have to share that the book I am listening to right now is one of the most powerful books I have ever heard. It is called ‘Whole, Rethinking the Science of Nutrition’ by T. Colin Campbell, PhD.

There are so many aspects of this book I can share about, but to summarize it would mean to tell you that what I learned in statistics in college was absolutely true. Statistics don’t lie statisticians do. Out access to health is being controlled by big business, pharma, food processors, the government and even medical journals. Dr. Campbell is very good at pointing out all the issues at about every step of the process from getting funding for research, to the basis of why the research projects are the way they are. As he says the health care industry isn’t about keeping you healthy, it is about fixing your medical problems. After all, it is more lucrative to treat disease than it is to prevent it.

Dr. Campbell’s book is giving me more choices, what do I want to do to take care of myself. He is very committed to the point that a whole food plant diet is the best protection against illness and states multiple studies that have been done over the years. He shows how entire populations do not suffer disease like we do in the United States because they eat healthier. The United States has arguably the best doctors and medical system in the world…but we are by far the sickest of all the countries. He just wants you to think about it…why are we so sick.

So on this 4th of July holiday weekend I just want to exercise my right to an opinion…if you want to see another point of view regarding health care in our country then read Whole. You won’t be sorry.
