What drinking soda can do to your body part 2

Last month I wrote about what happens to your body right after you drink a soda.  This month some other interesting facts about sodas.

If you think moderation is the key sip on these facts.  One soda a day can double your chance of developing type 2 diabetes and according to The Nurse’s Health Study which followed 90,000 women for 8 years, drinking a soda a day added about 10 pounds of fat in 4 years.

Now when it comes to intelligence a 2002 UCLA study found that consuming excess sugar decreases a brain chemical called “brain derived neurotropic factor”.  Studies have shown that this can make it tougher for one to remember things or learn new things.  Another study from the University of Copenhagen links decreased levels of BDNF to depression and dementia.  There was a 2010 study from the University of Minnesota showing chronic sugar consumption can inhibit the brain’s ability to know when to stop eating making you susceptible to weight gain and obesity.

When it comes to your heart a 2012 study from Harvard showed one soda a day increased one’s chance of heart disease by 20%.  Here is a new twist, according to a University of Miami study a daily diet soda habit increased the risk of a cardiovascular event by 61%.

There are other links to day consumption and cancer, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, COPD and increased risk of asthma attacks.

And we all know the sugar in soda is bad for your teeth.  But there is also citric and phosphoric acid in soda which makes drinking soda like drinking battery acid.  In addition the phosphoric acid pulls essential minerals out of your teeth and bone adding fire to the cavity situation and being an issue for osteoporosis as well.
