What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry treatments put patients into a state of complete peace and relaxation before a dental procedure. Patients who undergo sedation dentistry before their procedure are awake enough to answer questions, but feel completely at ease throughout their appointment. Even if you suffer from extreme dental anxiety, sedation dentistry can alleviate your stress and help you experience an enjoyable dental visit. Many patients report reduced sensitivity, and little to no memory of the procedure itself.
Types of Sedation Dentistry
Different sedation dentistry treatments achieve different levels of sedation. There are three main sedation dentistry treatments that can help you achieve a state of deep relaxation during your procedure.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation | Nitrous oxide has been used for decades and is a tried and true dental sedation treatment that is completely safe, effective, and easy to administer. Nitrous oxide achieves a lighter state of sedation and wears off quickly once the procedure is completed.
Oral Conscious Sedation | Patients who participate in oral conscious sedation are given a small pill to take about thirty minutes before their procedure. Once the effects of the sedation have set in, your dentist will begin your procedure, and you’ll be able to enjoy a safe, effective, state of relaxation. Oral conscious sedation patients will need to find a ride to and from the dental office.
IV Sedation | IV sedation is administered using an IV shortly before your procedure begins. With IV sedation patients can achieve an even deeper state of relaxation throughout their procedure, and feel totally comfortable and at ease. IV sedation patients will need to find a ride to and from the dentist office.
